Production [edit]

In 2014, the series was first announced by Netflix and Scholastic Media, and was titled The Magic School Bus 360°.[10] The new iteration of the franchise features a modernized "Ms. Frizzle" (replacing Valerie with her younger sister Fiona) and a loftier-tech jitney that stresses modern inventions such every bit robotics, wearables and camera technology. The promise is to obsess children's imaginations and motivate their interest in the sciences.[xi] It was produced past ix Story Media Group.[12] Producer Stuart Stone, who voiced Ralphie in the original serial, stated that The Magic Schoolhouse Bus 360° will feature some of the original vocalisation actors in different roles. The show'due south voice cast is based in Los Angeles, California, United States and Toronto, Ontario, Canada with Susan Blu as the Los Angeles voice director and Alyson Court every bit the Toronto voice manager.[13] In February 2017, Kate McKinnon was cast in the office of Ms. Frizzle (without clarifying it was Fiona, the younger sister of Valerie, now Professor Frizzle, all the same voiced by Tomlin). The serial then changed its proper noun to The Magic Schoolhouse Bus Rides Again.[14] The series was released on Netflix on September 29, 2017.[i] The 2nd season was released on April 13, 2018.[2]

Lin-Manuel Miranda of Hamilton sings the theme song.[15] Phoebe Terese, a character from the original series, is replaced by a new student named Jyoti, equally it was revealed that Phoebe transferred back to her erstwhile schoolhouse.[16] [17] The episode endings feature question and answer sessions with Professor Frizzle, echoing the segments near viewers calling the producer which accompanied the original series on commercial-complimentary channels.[18] Despite clarifying some artistic license taken in the episode, these scenes are nevertheless fix in a universe with magical vehicles.[19] Among other changes, the students still vesture the same clothes every day just they do non resemble those from the original series.[20] Three 45–infinitesimal specials were released in 2020: the commencement special The Magic School Coach Rides Again: Kids in Space was released on August 7,[21] the second named The Magic School Passenger vehicle Rides Again: The Frizz Connection on October 20[22] and a 3rd titled The Magic School Autobus Rides Again: In the Zone on Dec 26.[23] The artstyle was inverse for the specials as the characters have no outlines and the lighting and shading are more detailed.

Critical reception [edit]

Why has this practiced-natured bear witness already received an inordinate amount of judgement? How can this much vitriol be thrown at a creation before anyone has even seen information technology?

Decider, [24]

Afterwards the series' announcement and the release of its trailer, at that place was initial resistance to the new art style, absence of Lily Tomlin as Ms. Frizzle, and fright information technology would not live upwards to the original series.[25] [26] AOL accused the show of giving Ms. Frizzle a nose job.[27] Hurry put this downwardly to fans of the testify beingness "protective of its legacy".[28]

Despite this speculation, the serial has been critically acclaimed upon release. Common Sense Media deemed the show a worthy successor to its 1990s sister serial, praising its gender and ethnic diverseness and its commitment to instruction children about STEM subjects.[29] Christianity Today argues that the evidence managed to keep the "genius of the franchise", which is that the children are almost more intrigued by the complexity and gild of the natural world rather than the magic of the titular school bus.[30] Daily Dot praised the series' premiere for addressing the change to the show's structure, putting viewers at ease through the transition, adding that the science was made "approachable".[26] The Houstonian found the episodes' scenarios to exist "pretty interesting", commenting on the academical and moral lessons.[31] The AV Club felt the serial lives up to its predecessor, and contains the same "goofy humour and ease with making learning fun".[32] Another AV Club article wrote that the serial is "lively, fast-paced, and exceedingly tolerable for adults", and full of plenty scientific discipline to allow them to park their kids in front of information technology guilt-free.[33]
